The third week of Premier Hockey Federation is set to get underway on Saturday featuring two teams trying to show that their play in the bubble last season was no fluke, as the Toronto Six get set to host the Connecticut Whale.
Saturday will be a special event as it will be the first official home game for the Six, as they were not able to play a home game in the inaugural season due travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.
After an impressive performance in the Isobel Cup last season, making it all the way to the semifinals, the Six look to improve in the franchise’s second campaign. They started off on the right foot, beating the Buffalo Beauts in their first game of the season two weeks ago, thanks to a power play goal from Michela Cava in the final minute of regulation.
Mikayla Grant-Mentis, who led the Six in scoring last season, picked up three assists in the win.
The Whale have played four times already in the opening two weekends, and hung in there with the defending champion Boston Pride last weekend. After splitting with the Metropolitan Riveters in the opening weekend, Connecticut dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Pride on Saturday. However, the Whale, led by a 20-save performance from goaltender Abbie Ives, won 3-1 on Sunday to improve to a 2-1-1 to start the season. Offensively, Connecticut is led by Alyssa Wohlfeiler and Emma Vlasic, with each having five points, with Wohlfeiler leading the team with four goals.
These teams only met once last season in the bubble, with the Six’s offense lighting up the Whale with a 6-0 win in the second-to-last game in the first bubble stint in January.
