Bucknell Men's Water Polo Falls to Wagner in MAWPC Opening Round

11/19/2021 6:24:00 PM | Men's Water Polo

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team started fast, but the Seahawks managed to overturn a 4-0 first quarter deficit in taking an 8-7 win over the Bison in a first round matchup in the MAWPC Championship on Friday evening.

Bucknell started brightly in this one, taking a 4-0 lead after two goals each from Josh Yardley and Hasan Mogultay gave Bucknell a 4-0 lead after one quarter.  The Bison kept the Seahawks off the board in the period in large part to six saves from goalkeeper Adrien Touzot, who made a career-high 19 saves in the game.

Wagner managed to work its way back in the game in the second, scoring two unanswered tallies, including one with 1:26 to go in the half, to halve the Bucknell lead at 4-2 at the halftime break.

The Seahawks continued that momentum, tying the game at four at the 6:11 mark of the third as Bucknell was held without a goal for over 11 minutes.  However, Shay Gillearn restored the Bucknell lead with a goal just seconds later at the 5:57 mark of the third.  Wagner once again found a response, tying the game at five with 50 seconds to go in the third as the two teams entered the fourth tied for the second time.

The fourth quarter was an eventful one, with Wagner taking the lead twice in the period.  Matt Ryckman tied the game at six with 6:06 remaining, before two goals from the Seahawks in just over a minute gave Wagner a two-goal lead with 4:27 remaining.  The Bison had several chances to tie the game, including two penalty shots in the final minutes of the game.  J. Yardley converted one with just under a minute to go to pull within 8-7, but a great save by Wagner's Ethan Zirh on a second penalty won by the Bison with 25 seconds left helped Wagner hang on for the one-goal victory.

J. Yardley led the way for the Bison with three goals, while Mogultay added two goals.  Gillearn and Ryckman each added goals, while Touzot set a new career best with his 19 saves.

Bucknell will face eighth-seeded Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the consolation round of the MAWPC Tournament.
