First and foremost, Kenny Rogers was the man.

Back in the day, there was no one that could compete with his level of cool. The beard, the voice, the suave album artwork, the guy was just in a league of his own.

Just look at this man.

Even in the year 2024, Rogers is a massive name in country music, but to be honest it’s hard for me not to remember a certain video where one of the greatest comedians of all-time broke down some Kenny Rogers lyrics.

It’s a video that that actually makes me uncontrollably laugh.

The great Norm Macdonald (RIP) was a guest on the Adam Carolla Show years back and somehow or another the subject of two Kenny Rogers songs came up and the whole crew decided to break down the lyrics of “Ruby Don’t Take Your Love To Town”, which was originally a Waylon Jennings song before Kenny Rogers released a version in 1969, and “Coward Of The County”, which was released on his Kenny album in 1979.

Both of these songs are known to be quite dark, one about a paralyzed veteran who’s woman is cheating on him because he can’t satisfy her and the other about a man who’s wife is sexually assaulted by a group of three brothers.

But man, listening to Norm and Adam riff on the darkness is just so good. Even though plenty of jokes are made, at the end Adam says “I got to tell you, Kenny Rogers runs a lot deeper than we give him credit for.”

Ain’t that the truth.

RIP Kenny and Norm, two absolute legends.
