Faith Matters: A time for giving thanks, a time for sharing

When was the last time we offered a genuine thanks, broke bread with those we care about and generously shared our bounty with strangers — only to discover that they weren’t really strange at all?!

This is the month of giving thanks and sharing the goodness in our lives and, unlike last year, our tables, as well as our hearts, have space to welcome all. This holiday — this month — is not merely about the special treats that we indulge in and give as gifts. It is, rather, an opportunity to know the Presence of Spirit through the presence we offer to others; it is a heart-encounter of noteworthy size. But this is only if we recognize the thanks-giving as a unitive experience and participate in it fully. If we openly, freely and generously allow the grace of giving to flow through us in whatever way is needed. If we answer the call that echoes within our hearts.

Some of us will prepare and share food to nourish those with little, some will give their time and a listening ear of comfort to those who are in deep grief. Some will send checks to the larger sources of help and some will provide space for the marginalized to recognize their value.

This is a time for the capstone of all traditions to define our humanity and our faith. This month provides a rich resting place on our spiritual journey, a soft landing, a moment to take stock, reach out and feed ourselves and those who walk the path with us. Let us be thankful for all we have and let that thanks be the source of our sharing with the world. May we be grateful for our full plates as we help to fill those of others. Happy and blessed Thanksgiving.
