Police are conducting a death investigation at Monroe Street in Eugene.

Eugene police arrested a 38-year-old man for murder after a death investigation in the College Hill neighborhood.

James Paul Cable was arraigned Friday on charges of second-degree murder and assaulting a public safety officer after police say he killed 35-year-old Daniel Pizzutti.

Police were first called to a house in the 2400 block of Monroe Street at 12:49 a.m. Thursday, then brought in Eugene Police Department's violent crimes unit to assist with a death investigation, spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said Thursday.

According to a news release, police contacted Cable   at his home Thursday and took him into custody in connection with the homicide investigation on Monroe Street.

Cable allegedly struck a detective, the release said, and police later arrested him on charges of murder in the second degree and assault on a public safety officer.

Police say the man knew Pizzutti.

According to EPD, there may be a connection between the homicide and crash at East 29th Avenue and Amazon Parkway.

Police were called to that crash around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, the release says.

A 2022 silver, four-door Chevrolet Silverado with a Florida license plate associated with the man police have since arrested had crashed in the creek bed, police said.

EPD is asking anyone with information about the crash or the death to call Det. Cliff Sites at 541-682-5147.
