Typewriter Rodeo: Love

Each week, the Standard reaches out to Austin’s Typewriter Rodeo for a custom poem on Texas topics.

It feels like there may not be a whole lot new to say about love in poetry. But perhaps that’s exactly why humans can’t stop writing about it? Texas Standard listener Michael Abild requested this poem about “the creative and sustaining nature of love.”

Love (for Michael Abild)

Ah love-y love love

So many odes and songs

Can you even write

A single word

That hasn’t already been penned?

Well.

Well.

That’s kind of it, right?

You think there can’t possibly be

More

And yet every time

You dip in, and give in

There it is —

An endless supply

Helping you create something new

Every time

Giving sustenance

For that spring in your step

Every time

This well

That never runs dry

That feeds you

The more you feed it

So don’t worry —

Words will always come

Love

Will always flow.
