The Many Saints of Newark

In this week’s new movies on VOD, Tony Soprano is alive and well in David Chase’s prequel to The Sopranos, The Many Saints of Newark. In the new film, Michael Gandolfini plays Tony, the role that was originally played by his father, James.

Writer-director Abel Ferrara’s latest film, Zeros and Ones, starring Ethan Hawke is also out this week. Much of the film, about a soldier named J.J. who’s called to action when Rome is threatened by a mysterious terrorist bombing, was shot in Italy during lockdown, making the creepy, desolate vibe that much more unsettling.

Cryptozoo, an animated film from filmmaker Dash Shaw, is a film about a woman (voiced by Lake Bell) who saves mythical cryptids, creatures like baku and krakens and every other species you heard about in tall tales, and brings them to a cryptozoo, a safe haven where they can live out their days. Thing is, the cryptozoo lets visitors in to gawk at the animals, so it’s not quite ideal. The animation style is pretty out there and the story is unlike any you’ve ever seen, making this film a truly original one.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

The Many Saints of Newark

The year is 1967 and Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini) is just a young kid who falls under the influence of his uncle, Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola). (Dickie will eventually go on to father Christophah, played by Michael Imperioli in the TV series, who appears in this film in voiceover only.) Dickie is a member of the DiMeo crime family, and this is the story of his own troubled past and parentage, which serves to provide a richer back story into who the characters on The Sopranos were and how they got to be that way, but it’s also the story one one angry dude. It may not fill the Sopranos-sized hole in your heart, but it’s a nice distraction.

Zeros and Ones

Filmed in Italy during the pandemic, Abel Ferrara’s Zeros and Ones took advantage of the quiet isolation offered by lockdown for this political action film. Rome, facing an imminent terrorist threat, is essentially under siege and a soldier named J.J. (Ethan Hawke) arrives to the city to help thwart attack. Hawke also plays Justin, J.J.’s brother, a man who might be delusional, but he also might have some key information that can help J.J.
