Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) has the future of IU in his hands. At the conclusion of the latest Chicago PD episode, “Fractures”, the character was given the opportunity to protect his career as long as he placed the blame for a murder cover-up on officer Voight (Jason Beghe).

The episode wrapped before Halstead could decide, and the holiday hiatus of the show has made the anticipation for his decision even more intense. Is he going to rat out his mentor? Is he going to look for an alternative option?

Here’s what we know about Halstead and his path for the rest of Chicago PD season 9.

Will Halstead take the FBI’s deal?

It’s no secret that Halstead has been at odds with Voight throughout the season. The guilt and anxiety that Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) has experienced as a result of her pact with Voight has led to many sleepless nights, and this visible toll is what tipped off Halstead as to the problem.

He ultimately discovered the truth when Voight let it slip that Upton shot and killed Roy Walton (Michael Maize) at the end of season 8, and agreed to keep quiet about the location of the body. Halstead went as far as to punch Voight, after the latter suggested that he may not know his fiancé as well as he thought he did.

Halstead having issues with Voight to selling Voight down the river is radically different, however. The two men have gotten along well historically, and Voight has even served as a father figure for Halstead over the course of the show. Deciding to make a deal with the FBI at Voight’s expense would permanently sour their bond.

Then there’s the comments that Soffer have made in relation to season 9. He told Cinemablend that his character shouldn’t be expecting a promotion anytime soon due to some complications with Voight.

"“I don’t know if Jay’s gonna get a promotion. The next rank is sergeant, and we have Sergeant Voight”, Soffer asserted. “So I think the only way for Jay to get a promotion to sergeant would be for Voight to get a promotion.”"

This only furthers the theory that Halstead will run afoul of Voight in terms of trust. If we had to float a guess, we think the cop will be tempted to turn on Voight, but will ultimately decide against it and find another way to escape FBI charges.

We hope Halstead doesn’t take the bait and cut a deal, because he’s far more likely to get axed as a character than Voight. The latter is the closest Chicago PD gets to a protagonist, so his position is fairly secure. Halstead, despite being a key player, could realistically leave the show if things got to a breaking point.

Here’s hoping the two characters will be able to work out their differences.
