‘Long Strange Trip’

A running motif of Frankenstein, not to mention high-minded discussions of the notion of art, time, and permanence? Yes, indeed, and it makes for a unique and riveting documentary about that most American (not to mention culturally significant) of bands: the Grateful Dead. Longtime heads will happily tune in and drop out, of course, but casual or even non-fans shouldn’t fear this artfully designed doc. Long Strange Trip is cleverly laid out, bolstered by recurring motifs that ultimately pay off in emotional spades. Highly recommended.

‘Dead Poets Society’

From Dead Poets Society to "The Tortured Poets Department"... last week, Taylor Swift dropped the first music video from her new album and it featured none other than two of Welton Academy's finest, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles, with nods to their characters from the hit 1989 film. So, I thought there's no better time to revisit Dead Poets... Read more

‘Big Mood’

Big Mood is a rare little gem of British comedy that will have you thinking of everything from Ab Fab to Fleabag. Like the raunchy '90s hit about two messy adult female friends blustering through life, Big Mood's charm comes from besties Maggie (Nicola Coughlan) and Eddie's (Lydia West) loving, punchline-punctured, completely mad antics. However,... Read more

It's been over three years, I'm still mad that Steven Yeun didn't win an Oscar for Minari. But at least now Minari is streaming on Netflix, which means you're out of excuses if you haven't yet seen this wonderful movie. Yeun stars as Jacob Yi, an ambitious South Korean immigrant who moves his family to the middle-of-nowhere in Arkansas to pursue... Read more

‘Strange Way of Life’

Pedro Almodóvar, Ethan Hawke, and Pedro Pascal: how could you possibly go wrong? Trick question, you can't — and Strange Way of Life is proof of that. The short film has been described as Almodóvar's answer to 2005's Brokeback Mountain, but it comes in a bite-sized 31-minute package that's relatively tame compared to both Brokeback and the...
