Teatro dell’Opera di Roma to Open 2021-22 with Historic ‘Julius Cesar’

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is set to open its 2021-22 season with the world premiere of “Julius Caesar” by Giorgio Battistelli.

The world premiere marks the first time since 1901 that the Teatro Costanzi opens a season with a world premiere. The previous time was for “Le maschere” by Mascagni.

For the historic evening Music Director Daniele Gatti will lead the production by Robert Carsen. Rai Cultura will stream the production on Rai5 on Nov. 20 and on Nov. 21, the opera will be broadcast on Rai Radio3.

The work is based on William Shakespeare’s play with a libretto by Ian Burton. The cast will include Clive Bayley (Julius Caesar), Elliot Madore (Brutus), Julian Hubbard (Cassius), Dominic Sedgwick (Antony), Michael J. Scott (Casca), Hugo Hymas (Lucius), Ruxandra Donose (Calpurnia), Alexander Sprague (Octavius), Christopher Lemmings (Cinna / Marullus), Christopher Gillett (Indovino / I Plebeo), Allen Boxer (Flavius / Metellus / II Plebeo), Scott Wilde (Decius / III Plebeo), and Alessio Verna (Servo di Cesare / Titinius / IV Plebeo).

“Julius Cesar” will be presented on Nov. 20 through Nov. 28, 2021.
