Wasatch County to celebrate Thanksgiving week and beginning of holiday season

Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 25.

Thanksgiving week in Wasatch County means there’ll be events to bring the community together as the holiday season begins.

For a second consecutive year, the Wasatch Community Foundation’s annual Thanksgiving dinner is canceled. That’s once again due to COVID-19, according to Jonelle Fitzgerald of the Wasatch County Health Department and an administrator for the foundation. She says the virus is still spreading too much to hold a meal for more than 500 people.

Instead, families can pick up meal kits to prepare at home. The community foundation, health department and Lee’s Marketplace are helping to provide the boxes with ingredients for family meals to pick up at the Heber Valley Food Pantry.

Pick-up is Friday from 11 to 4. They’re putting together 350 boxes to give out to whoever shows up or calls for them while supplies last. They’re also offering to deliver.

The 19th annual Midway Turkey Trot is happening Thanksgiving morning at 9 a.m., starting at Town Square. Registration is open to “run, skip, jog or bike” the 5K. Proceeds will benefit local families, in particular to support Alzheimer’s patients.

The event will include refreshments like bagels and hot chocolate, and there’ll be a silent auction.

The following week, Heber City will hold a tree lighting ceremony and Old Fashioned Christmas event on Friday, December 3 at City Hall. The city says to come for hot chocolate and a “very special visitor from the North Pole.”
