An opinion piece by The Hill published earlier this week suggested possible democratic nominees for president to run in 2024. Instead of President Biden and Vice President Harris, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was named along with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Stacey Abrams, a former Georgia state representative.
During a press conference on Thursday, Beshear said he will not run for president in 2024.
“No, I am not. I am running for governor in 2023. This is where I'm raising my family. This is where I'm from. This is where I want to be,” Beshear said.
On Wednesday, Beshear signed an executive order expanding access to boosters for people over 18 who are due for another shot.
Those who received Pfizer or Moderna vaccines may get a booster after six months. Anyone who received the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine is eligible after two months.
Beshear said COVID-19 cases are plateauing and encouraged people to get a booster before the holidays.
“This is the first Thanksgiving where you have an opportunity for everybody at the table to be vaccinated and to have their booster with the highest level of immunity,” he said.
Beshear said it’s possible that the state could see a surge in cases after Thanksgiving.
The number of COVID-19 cases have plateaued in Kentucky. The percentage of hospitalizations among people who are fully vaccinated has increased over time from 8% to 16%, Beshear said.
