A search for Brian Laundrie is expected to continue at the Carlton Reserve on Saturday. (CREDIT: North Port Police Department) New records are beginning to reveal just how extensive and expensive the Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie investigation was for law enforcement. It had an enormous impact on the North Port Police budget. North Port Police records show they paid almost three times more in overtime during the time of the Petito-Laundrie investigation than they had in the prior year combined. Gabby Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11, and Brian Laundrie’s remains were found on Oct. 21. During that period, North Port Police was covering their normal responsibilities while also handling a case that gripped the world. The North Port Police Department budget shows they spent about $195,000 on overtime in September and October. That’s almost more than three times what they reported paying from September 2020 to September 2021, when they doled out about $67,000. North Port Police declined an interview request from WINK News for this update, but has previously discussed how challenging the case became. Josh Taylor, the public information officer North Port Police Department said in the past, “this has been a very trying case. A lot of eyeballs on it. What I know in my heart is that in this room here, there was a lot of individuals pouring their heart and soul into finding answers here.” Law enforcement told WINK News, even when they’re working with the FBI, there’s no reimbursement for overtime hours. We also reviewed the department’s overall budget, but their total expenses for those two months were slightly down from their previous year’s average.
