The Eugene City Council is seeking ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while heating or cooling buildings. One way is to phase out natural gas, which is a fossil fuel.
The City Council is considering requiring all new construction to install electric heating and cooling systems. But, there’s concern about the capacity for EWEB to supply power to the full city. And Eugene is negotiating with Northwest natural on its efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
“This council is committed to moving forward toward electrification and de-carbonization in a very deliberative, thoughtful and successful way,” said Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis. “We want to move that work forward.”
Vinis said she expects this topic to dominate their conversations in 2022. At their Wednesday work session on their Climate Action Plan, council directed staff to create a roadmap to eliminate carbon energy use by 2045.
