Sean Payton revealed just how close the Saints were to signing Odell Beckham Jr. prior to his agreement with the Los Angeles Rams. In an interview on the Dan Patrick Show, Payton said he had a positive mindset until the Rams came to the table.

“All along if LA had an opportunity I knew that's where he was going to go,” Payton said. He added that the Los Angeles Rams weren't even an option for Odell until about the “middle of the process.”

The Saints head coach also mentioned Odell's history with Louisiana as a potential selling point. The wide receiver was born in Baton Rouge and attended Louisiana State University.

While Payton “thought real positive” on the possibility of scoring the controversial receiver, he isn't exactly sure that was the case.

“I would say fairly close but I think only he would be able to answer that,” the longtime Saints head coach said.

Odell's one year deal with the Rams included a hefty paycheck, featuring a $500k signing bonus, $750k for the season, and the potential for $3 million in team-based incentives.

Beckham played his first game with the Rams in Week 10 under the primetime, Monday night lights. The Rams fell to the San Francisco 49ers, who picked up their first home win in over a year. As for Beckham's performance, Stafford targeted him three times, but he managed two receptions for a total of 18 yards.
