Judge Raquel West has sentenced a defendant to the maximum life in prison for murder in a shooting death at Port Arthur's Prince Hall apartments.
The jury deliberated for a little more than three hours before convicting Joshua Darrelle Henderson, 33, of Port Arthur.
Henderson chose to have the judge decide his sentence. Judge West sentenced him to life Thursday after hearing testimony in the punishment phase.
Henderson shot and killed Floyd Wayne Dergent, 49, in July of 2018.
Prosecutors say surveillance video from the apartments showed Henderson shoot Dergent and then kick him while Dergent was on the ground.
Evidence showed Dergent had been shot in the head and through both legs.
The U.S. Marshal's Service arrested Henderson in November in Dallas after they found him hiding in the trunk of a vehicle.
"The jury took their time to view not only the video that followed Henderson throughout the housing complex for several hours, but also the other five discs of all camera angles, as well as the photos admitted during trial taken from Facebook that showed Henderson posing with a handgun in his waistband," said prosecutor Phillip Smith. "This was a senseless and brutal murder. The family of Floyd Dergent now has closure and the are appreciative of the work of the Port Arthur Police Department and the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office."
