Chelsea had 65% possession to Servette’s 35%. Chelsea mustered 21 attempts on goal in total, but only six of those were on target. It was nine-one to Chelsea in corners, and the Blues completed 517 passes to Servette’s 152.

Full-time! Chelsea 1-0 Servette

The substitute Reiten slams a shot over the bar with the last kick of the game, and the final whistle sounds. Sam Kerr, soon after signing a two-year contract extension this week, provided the finish that won all three points for Emma Hayes’s side. And a classy finish it was too. It was a much, much tougher task than they found it in Switzerland last week, when they won 7-0, but a win is still a win, and from a neutral’s point of view, Servette’s determined defending and discipline was a joy to behold.

Chelsea are clear again at the top of Group A, four points clear of Juventus, who beat Wolfsburg 2-0 earlier today.

92 min: Chelsea maintain possession, passing the ball about nicely, waiting for the opening ... the opening duly arrives, with an incisive attack down the right. The ball is crossed low for James, who can’t direct her shot goalwards ... the ball comes back and Charles tries a cheeky back-flick which is saved. And there is still time, in the next phase of play, for James to blast a right-footed shot over the bar!

88 min: Cuthbert crosses from the right, Reiten sends a headed effort looping just wide for Chelsea! Still, they are closing in on a precious three points – and a far more difficult win that last week’s seven-goal stroll.

85 min: Lauren James (who signed from Everton in July) comes off the bench for Chelsea, replacing Fran Kirby. Her brother Reece, of the Chelsea men’s team, is pictured applauding her on to the field. Guro Reiten also comes on for Sam Kerr.

82 min: Red card for Servette! (Soulard)

Servette continue to defend with determination, and then some. Charles is fouled in midfield, and it’s a really bad studs-up challenge by the player who was recently booked for pulling down Kerr. It’s a second yellow card, and Servette are down to 10 for the last eight minutes plus stoppage time.

76 min: Servette burst forward again. Maendly is fouled and the resulting free-kick is launched into the penalty area. Bright, as so often, deals with the danger. Approaching the final 10 minutes and Servette are making a real game of this.

70 min: Three changes for Chelsea, with Fleming, Leopolz and Cuthbert on and Andersson, Ingle and England going off. Soulard of Servette is soon booked for hauling down Kerr, and it looks like a red card might be coming as the keeper was way out of the penalty area and Soulard was arguably the last defender ... however, it’s just a yellow card.

In one change for Servette, the forward Natalia Padilla-Bidas has gone off with Daina Bourma, a defender, coming on in her place.

Goal! 67 min: Chelsea 1-0 Servette (Kerr)

Lovely goal. Chelsea needed that. Kirby slides a tremendous pass through with the outside of her right boot. Kerr classily controls it, nutmegs her marker, holds off another would-be tackler, and slots a calm finish inside the far post. Superb.

66 min: Chelsea storm down to the other end and look set to score before Pereira rushes out to smother. Servette rush down to the other end for an effort of their own.

65 min: Servette nearly take the lead! A cross is fired in from the left, it drops to Mendes about six yards out, and she tries a cheeky little back flick which Musovic pounces on. A warning for Chelsea.

60 min: The referee awards a penalty to Chelsea ... for a handball by Beth England of Chelsea! The protests from Servette are immediate and sustained, and the referee soon changes her decision. All very strange.

58 min: Servette enjoy a rare little foray into the Chelsea half, releasing pressure on their defence temporarily. The commentator tells us the Swiss side have scored 17 goals in their previous four away matches, so they clearly have a cutting edge when required. But can they find it here against this accomplished Chelsea defence? It would be an enormous upset.

56 min: An absolutely brilliant defensive block by Nakkach denies Andersson a goal after a flowing Chelsea move. Seconds later, from the corner that results, Bright heads fractionally wide.

54 min: Lagonia is penalised for hauling back Ji, and gets a warning from the referee. Andersson pumps the resulting free-kick into the area but again, Servette are able to deal with the danger.

49 min: A good pass between the lines from Ji releases Kirby yet again, who is full of relentless running and skill. Kirby collects the ball and makes a looping run from the byline back towards goal, and eventually boots a shot over the bar. Chelsea win a corner, which is bent towards England at the near post. The England international clips a shot goalwards, looking for the far corner, which bounces out for a goal kick.

47 min: Kirby, again, is at the forefront for Chelsea and has a cross-shot from close range beaten out for a corner. That corner is knocked to the back post, where Ingle heads goalwards, but the effort lacks power and Pereira saves.

Second-half kick-off!

Here we go then. Can Chelsea find the breakthrough, get the three points, and move clear again at the top of Group A?

The half-time score in tonight’s other match, was Real Madrid 0-1 PSG, in Group B.

Half-time! Chelsea 0-0 Servette

Full marks to Eric Sévérac’s side for a fine defensive display in that first half. Kirby has been good for Chelsea and Bright has shown several touches of class with deliveries from deep ... but so far, they have drawn a blank. See you in a few minutes for more.

44 min: Chelsea’s England tries to muscle and dribble her way past several defenders near the edge of the Servette penalty area, but her run is ended by a strong diving challenge.

40 min: A spot of defending to do for Chelsea, as a decent ball is curled into the danger zone, but Bright heads clear. Chelsea stream down to the other end and Charles fires a cross over from the left, but no one can get on the end of it for Hayes’s side.

39 min: Kirby pops up on Chelsea’s left now. She lofts a good ball across to Kerr, who brings the ball down and blasts a shot over - but she was adjudged to be fractionally offside anyway.

37 min: Bright, yet again, finds space to curl in a cross. Spälti does well to head clear. If they can make it to half time without conceding, Servette will be thrilled with this defensive effort.

34 min: A brilliant delivery from Bright (again) causes the visiting defence all sorts of problems. England is on the end of it (again) and manages to head towards goal, this time beating the keeper, but the defender Mendes rushes back and clears off the line for Servette!

30 min: From midfield, Millie Bright clips a cultured ball over the top for England. England tries to get a decisive touch at the far post, but some more committed defending stops her from getting anything more than a gentle contact on it, and the keeper gathers easily. That was a lovely bit of vision from Bright, though.

27 min: I’ll be honest with you, my livestream for this match keeps dropping out, and judging by the comments on YouTube I’m not the only one having problems. Anyway, it’s 0-0, and we’re back to French commentary for now. The switching between English and French commentary is adding a certain frisson in the absence of goals.

26 min: More than halfway through the first half and this is shaping up to be a frustrating evening for Chelsea at this rate. Their superior fitness and conditioning is likely to start to tell, especially in the second half, but thus far the Swiss team, who are second in their domestic league behind Zurich, are competing extremely well.

22 min: England finds Kirby with a smart, instant pass out to the right. The ball is worked infield but again the determined Servette defence crowds out the Chelsea attack. The visitors get the ball down to the other end, where Padilla-Bidas has a shot saved, but she was just offside. On the touchline Hayes is roaring instructions to her midfielders.

20 min: Ingle finds Charles in midfield for Chelsea, around the halfway line, but Charles is crowded out of it as Servette continue to press the ball effectively. So far, so good for the Swiss club’s pressing strategy.

16 min: The French commentary returns on YouTube for a couple of minutes, as DAZN encourages us to work on our language skills, but now we’re back to English again. Maendly gets her foot on the ball, briefly, in midfield for the visitors, who are keeping their shape well. The Chelsea manager Hayes predicted that tonight would be much tougher than last week, and that is certainly proving the case so far.

14 min: Approaching the quarter-hour, and Servette have settled themselves down again nicely and stemmed the flow of Chelsea attacks. Kirby and Kerr link well again on the right, and Kerr tries to cross but there’s a good diving block from a Servette defender.

10 min: It’s been a determined start to the match from Servette, but Chelsea are starting to cut them open now. Kerr drops wide right, then plays a nice ball infield to Ji. Ji feeds Kirby, who shoots low from an angle, and Pereira saves well with her feet. A really slick sequence of passing from Chelsea, regardless.

7 min: The hosts burst down the right after a fine pass by Ji releases Kirby into space. She squares low for Kerr, who scuffs an attempted finish just wide of the far post. No matter, in a sense, because she was just offside anyway, but still an effort she won’t be satisfied with.

5 min: Chelsea win a corner. Eriksson takes it, aiming for the crowded six-yard box, but Servette deal with the danger comfortably.

3 min: The Natalia Padilla-Bidas makes a bright run and chases a ball over the top for the visitors. She floats a decent effort across goal, right-footed, which flies out for a goal kick to the relief of Chelsea’s defenders. An early warning for Chelsea.

First half kick-off!

Here we go. Players from both sides take the knee, and we’re off, just as DAZN’s YouTube channel inexplicably switches to French commentary!

In tonight’s other early kick-off in the Women’s Champions League, Breidablik of Iceland lost 2-0 at home against Kharkiv, in Group B.

The live stream for the match was due to start at 7.45pm, and doesn’t appear to have kicked into life just yet, but fingers crossed ...

The Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, quoted on the official Chelsea site, looking ahead to tonight’s match: “I expect them to make it more difficult. I always think that when you have thumped a team like we have, there is that expectation that you will do it again, which is never the case.

“Regardless of the result, I want to see the same consistency in the performance.”

Juve added a late second in Wolfsburg to close out a huge 2-0 win. That does indeed put them level on top of Group A with Chelsea, on seven points, for now at least ...

Elsewhere in the group - Juventus currently lead Wolfsburg by a goal to nil, inside the final 10 minutes. If it stays that way, Juve join Chelsea at the top of the table on seven points, but behind on goal difference, and of course Chelsea can move clear again with a win tonight.

Preamble

Last week, Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr both scored twice when Chelsea travelled to Geneva and thrashed the semi-professional side Servette 7-0. The Blues boss, Emma Hayes, insists tonight’s return match in Champions League Group A at Kingsmeadow will not be so straightforward, although it is difficult to foresee anything other than a win for the hosts.

Since losing to Arsenal on 5 September, Chelsea have embarked on an 11-match unbeaten run, scoring a remarkable 39 goals in the process. That sequence of results includes 10 victories plus a 3-3 Champions League draw against Wolfsburg last month.

With three defeats from three matches and 15 goals conceded, Servette are destined for the wooden spoon in Group A, but the fierce battle for qualification between Chelsea, Juventus and Wolfsburg means that every goal scored may count in the final reckoning. Fresh from signing a two-year contract extension at Chelsea, Kerr will be hungry for more goals in front of the club’s home fans tonight, and it would be foolish to bet against her getting one or two. Team news and more coming right up.

Kick off: 8pm
