Julian Fellowes’ The Gilded Age Premiere Date Set at HBO — Plus, Trailer Pits New Money Against Old

It’s game on in the lavish trailer that HBO dropped Thursday for The Gilded Age, Julian Fellowes’ eagerly anticipated Downton Abbey follow-up set in 1880s New York. In the dramatic promo for the period piece, set to debut on Monday, Jan. 24 (at 9/8c), Good Fight star Christine Baranski’s snooty Agnes van Rhijn explains to penniless niece Marian (Meryl Streep’s daughter, Louisa Jacobson) that “power belongs to Old New York, my dear, not the new.
“Never the new,” she adds… just time for us to get a peek at The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon as nouveau-riche Bertha Russell, whose efforts to gain entry into fancypants high society are as well-received as a mathlete’s attempt to sit with the mean girls in high school.
Per the official logline for the series, which also stars Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon as Agnes’ sister, Ada, and The Plot Against America’s Morgan Spector as Bertha’s husband, George: “The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, of great conflict between the old ways and brand-new systems, and of huge fortunes made and lost. Against the backdrop of this transformation, [the show] begins in 1882 with young Marian Brook moving from rural Pennsylvania to New York City after the death of her father to live with her thoroughly old-money aunts.
“Accompanied by Peggy Scott (UnREAL alum Denée Benton), an aspiring writer seeking a fresh start, Marian inadvertently becomes enmeshed in a social war,” it continues, “between one of her aunts, a scion of the old-money set, and her stupendously rich neighbors, a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife. Exposed to a world on the brink of the modern age, will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?”

Looks delicious and Christine is in it so I’m going to watch. Just that bit in the trailer from her is enough.
Wait, how is Christine is allowed to do two regular (not limited) series. She still on The Good Fight, you know!!! Is that a thing now!?!?

Good question, since most of the examples of actors doing a second series have been the second series being a limited series. My first guess would be that Baranski has a one season deal for The Gilded Age, which would make it a “limited series for her”. However, with the vast majority of streaming/cable series doing 10 episodes (or less) per season, it probably will end up being a “thing” that actors are allowed to be in two ongoing series at the same time.
Remind me, this series was first with NBC in development? I think this show looks awesome.
I didn’t watch Downton Abbey but I’ll watch anything Christine Baranski is in, even if it’s her sitting in a bare room reading the phone book.
I’m on the fence, not crazy about the cast.
I love that Audra McDonald and Christine Baranski are both in another show together. They’re amazing in the Good Fight.
