ANN ARBOR, MI -- The Ark has announced its musician lineup for the 2022 Folk Festival, with headliners including Glen Hansard, Punch Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin.

The Folk Festival, started in 1976, will be held in University of Michigan’s Hill Auditorium on Friday, Jan. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 29, with shows starting at 6:30 p.m.

“Now in its 45th year, the Ann Arbor Folk Festival is as much a key programming initiative as it is an important fundraiser,” said Barb Authier, a spokesperson for The Ark, in an email to MLive. “The primary goal of this year’s 45th Folk Fest in January 2022 is to present the best in emerging and signature talent in the folk, roots and ethnic genres and to celebrate the return of live, in-person music experiences.”

The festival, which is held in conjunction with the Ford Motor Company Fund, is the venue’s largest annual fundraiser. It typically raises between $50,000 to $150,000 in donations, with this year’s goal set as between $50,000 and $100,000, Authier said.

Friday’s lineup includes Glen Hansard, Punch Brothers, Madison Cunningham, Ghost of Paul Revere, Gina Chavez, and Kyshona. Saturday will feature Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Oshima Brothers, Sweet Water Warblers, Britteny Spencer and Jared Deck.

This is the first in-person Folk Festival since January 2020, after the coronavirus pandemic suspended its live operation.

Glen Hansard, one of Friday’s headliners, first saw international attention for his role as guitar player Outspan Foster in the 1991 movie “The Commitment.” He also is also part of folk-rock duo The Swell Season, which took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly,” part of the “Once” soundtrack. He also has released more than 10 albums.

The festival will also feature Michigan-founded Sweet Water Warblers, 10-time Austin Music Award winner Gina Chavez and the Oshima Brothers, who had their local debut at The Ark’s Art Fair Stage in 2019.

Single-night tickets cost between $45 and $225, while Series tickets, which covers both nights, cost between $80 and $400. Benefactor-level tickets cost $1,250. Gold, Platinum and Benefactor-level tickets include benefits such as personalized seating, a parking pass and an invitation to the Folk Festival Pre-Glow Party before Saturday’s event.

Tickets for Gold, Platinum and Benefactor tickets are on sale from Nov. 29 through Dec. 3. Tickets for Ark members at the $20 Friend level and up can buy pre-sale tickets Dec. 6 trough Dec. 8. Ticket sales open to the general public on Dec. 10. Both shows begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held on Jan 28. and Jan 29 at the Hill Auditorium, at 825 North University Avenue in Ann Arbor.
