There's been a long-standing debate within the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom as to which character is fit to lead the Avengers now that one of its founding members and defacto leader Tony Stark aka Iron Man is gone. Of course, names like Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel are top contenders for the role but over the last couple of years, one Avenger has stepped up to prove his worth and that is none other than Spider-Man himself.

Many fans believe that it's still a little too early for Peter Parker to assume the position as the leader of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes but to Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo, the web-slinger has officially become Stark's replacement as the "soul" of the billion-dollar franchise.

In an interview with GQ Magazine, 1/2 of the Marvel directing duo the Russo Brothers believes that actor Tom Holland now plays the role Robert Downey Jr. once played in the MCU. He explains: "Tom is stepping into the role that Robert Downey once occupied for Marvel which is the favorite character, and in a lot of ways the soul of the Marvel universe."

The death of Tony Stark left a massive void in the MCU that will definitely be hard to fill. Naturally, the billion-dollar film and television franchise will be experiencing a true changing of the guard this Phase 4 but it still remains to be seen which Marvel hero will actually step up to the plate.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man will be put to the test now that Earth-616 is set to face multiversal consequences thanks to his desire to conceal his true identity. With the odds seemingly stacked against him, it'll be interesting to see how Parker puts an end to the mess he created in the first place.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters on December 17, 2021.
