Roger Federer has impressed the tennis world since he turned pro in 1998. Fans have gotten used to seeing Federer year after year at each of the four Grand Slams: the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. However, as the star has aged, he has had to manage his workload, leading to some unfortunate absences.

Federer provided the tennis world with an update on his status for the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the upcoming season- and it should upset all fans of the sport.

There was already some doubt that Roger Federer would be able to compete in the Australian Open, but now Wimbledon too? This is upsetting news for those who were counting on a Federer comeback post-knee surgery.

Federer bowed out in straight sets in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon to Hubert Hurkacz last season, the last time he was on the court before enduring a procedure on his knee. The 20-time Grand Slam winner has spoken about how the end of his career is near but that he wants to give fans a chance to say farewell.

Given that he recently turned 40 and is set to miss both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, as well as the French Open in between, Federer's next chance to return to the court on the big stage will be the 2022 US Open. Here's hoping that he is able to get himself healthy enough to make an appearance at Flushing Meadows come August.

Fans will undoubtedly continue to debate who is the greatest tennis player of all time between Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. But what cannot be debated is the grace, class and artistry of Roger Federer on and off the court.

While the tennis world will have to wait a bit to see Roger Federer again, the hope is that he will be able to take the court in a Grand Slam one last time before he bids the game farewell.
