Lawyers for Alex Murdaugh said in a court filing Wednesday that he should not have to pay back millions of dollars he allegedly stole from the estate of Gloria Satterfield.
Attorneys argue Murdaugh is off the hook for payment because co-defendants paid $6 million, more than the initial sum, in a settlement with the estate.
This latest filing comes after lawyers for Satterfield's estate announced a second settlement in a civil suit related to alleged theft of millions in life insurance money from the Satterfield family. Satterfield, the longtime housekeeper for the Murdaugh family, died after an apparent trip-and-fall accident in the family home.
On Tuesday, a lawyer for the Satterfield estate told ABC News 4 they had reclaimed $6.5 million from five parties.
Murdaugh's attorneys also argue he shouldn't have to pay due to the pending criminal charges brought against him by State Law Enforcement Division.
Murdaugh is currently at the center of high-profile civil suits and investigations. SLED is pursuing charges against Murdaugh for allegedly trying a $10 million life insurance fraud scheme, after initially claiming he was attacked by a gunman. Murdaugh is currently in jail after a judge denied bond for him on more than one occasion.
SLED is also investigating the deaths of Murdaugh's wife and son, Maggie and Paul, who were found earlier this year shot in a double homicide outside the family's home.
