How to get Google’s Live Translate on any Pixel phone

Do you remember the good old days when Google’s Nexus phones were essentially vanilla versions of Android? These days, to differentiate the Pixel phones from each other and the competition, Google has turned to the use of software exclusive features.

With the Pixel 6, one of those features is Live Translate in which during the demo, it showed how a user could perform translations live and in real-time, even without needing an internet connection. It’s pretty cool, we have to admit, but what if you don’t have a Pixel 6 or don’t plan to upgrade to a new phone anytime soon?

Thankfully, you won’t have to sit this one out if you have a Pixel device that has been updated to Android 12. This was discovered by XDA’s Mishaal Rahman who discovered that you could essentially sideload the feature onto any compatible Pixel handset.

Live Translate on any Pixel phone

  1. Download the Android System Intelligence APK onto your phone
  2. Tap on “OK” to save the file
  3. Open the file once it’s finished downloading
  4. Tap the update button when the installer prompts you
  5. Once the update is complete, go to Settings
  6. Tap on Settings > Live Translate
  7. Toggle on “Use Live Translate”
  8. Tap “Add a language” to add different languages, and you’re done

Now what happens is that whenever you launch an app that supports Live Translate, you’ll see a “Translate to <language>” option. Keep in mind that as it stands, different languages can only support certain features. So depending on the language you want to translate, you might not be able to make full use of the feature until Google adds support for it later on.
