Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation are offering an update to the Highway 23/Mission Creek Project at the western-most edge of Duluth.  A public meeting has been scheduled for Monday, November 22 to provide those updates, answer questions, and solicit comments.

Northlanders will remember that the project had originally gotten underway in 2017 until crews determined that they had disturbed a Native American burial site.  Work at the Mission Creek Bridge Replacement Project site was halted and a series of meetings, sessions, and re-designs has taken place since.

What came out of those sessions was a plan to move forward that was agreed upon by all interested parties.  According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation:

"In collaboration with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, and the Office of the State Archeologist, MNDOT has since worked to help respectfully complete burial recovery and restore the cemetery site.  In November 2019, processed soils were returned to the cemetery area and the central slope was stabilized.  Work to complete soil screening and restore the cemetery landscape is ongoing."

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has since contracted with landscape architect Urban Ecosystems to develop a final design for restoring the site.  Restoration efforts are currently set to start up in the spring of 2022.

Ahead of that work start-up, MNDOT has been holding a series of public meetings regarding the project.  This next one scheduled for Monday, November 22 will happen at the Gary New Duluth Recreation Center:  801 101st Avenue West in Duluth.  The session is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM and end at 7:30 PM.
