Little Simz Screens Original Film At The Braindead Studios

On Tuesday, November 16th, WePresent hosted a private screening of I Love You, I Hate You, an original short film from famed rapper Little Simz. The event took place in Los Angeles, California at the Braindead Studios where guests were able to preview the film and listen to a Q&A lead by screenwriter Camilla Blackett.

Before the film began, guests were able to enjoy drinks and chat at the back patio. Minutes before the film began, the patio lights dimmed to let guests know that they should head to the screening room.

The film was presented by WePresent, WeTransfer’s creative and editorial platform aimed at celebrating art and telling stories in a unique, not-so-obvious way. Little Simz starred in her own short narrative film, which was directed by Sam Pilling, written by Caroline Adeyemi, cousin to Little Simz. The film co-stars Shaniqua Okwok, C.J. Beckford, and Sonia Ajuwa.

I Love You, I Hate You is a deeply personal story of facing past emotions or childhood traumas. In this case, the main character, Sage, played by Little Simz, faces the unresolved trauma of her buried feelings for her absentee father while also facing a creative writer’s block. The film also correlates with Little Simz’s latest and most personal album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, as it ends with her single “I Love You, I Hate You.”

Following the 20-minute film, Camilla Blackett interviewed Little Simz on stage where Simz revealed that she realized the importance of telling stories and how she often found herself in the same position as the main character, Sage, with a constant desire of not wanting to write the project. Both Little Simz and WePresent did not want the storyline to be completely obvious and focused on the more intricate details such as the silent pauses, the music choices, and overall raw emotion.

I Love You, I Hate You premiers worldwide on Wednesday, November 17th on WePresent.
