Folks are being cautioned to gather Thanksgiving ingredients and staples early due to kinks in the supply chain, however it's important to be conscientious of food safety practices. Many people choose turkey as their main dish, fresh turkeys or frozen turkeys, and fresh turkeys can remain refrigerated for five to six days.

"Normally when you buy a fresh turkey, they're still partially frozen on the inside because they've kept them so cold," said Margaret Viebrock with Washington State University extension. "To thaw a frozen turkey, it takes about five pounds every 24 hours."

Viebrock notes that frozen and fresh turkeys quality is the same, the difference is really how much time people have to thaw the frozen turkey.
