Chelsea legend and former manager Frank Lampard was interviewed for the Aston Villa job before Steven Gerrard was appointed, according to the Sun today.

They say that Gerrard was the “overwhelming” choice, but that Lampard interviewed to replace Dean Smith – who has since taken over at Norwich as part of a rapid Premier League reshuffle across the board.

We’re not really sure why this is supposed to be surprising, or embarrassing for Lampard at all. Gerrard did a brilliant job at Rangers, and was always going to be top choice for any Premier League job he made himself available for, outside the top 4 perhaps.

We’re also not sure why it’s said he “secretly” interviewed – as though all the other candidates were paraded publicly.

Lampard’s time will come, and until then he will presumably interview for most top flight jobs that come up. His spell at Chelsea came in difficult circumstances, and he still showed a lot of good things.
