November 17, 2021 – Today, New York City Football Club (NYCFC) is pleased to launch a CoachMentorship Program with the aim of supporting and increasing representation for New York based soccer coaches. The program will develop coaching skills and expertise for underserved populations across the five boroughs and the Tri-State area.

In 2020, NYCFC announced a series of eleven commitments to support underserved and underrepresented communities, including a pledge to develop a mentorship program aimed to support these populations in the NYC metropolitan area. This new Coach Mentorship Program stays true to these pledges and the new program will provide a unique opportunity to work alongside the NYCFC Academy, Youth Programs and City in the Community (CITC) coaches to help develop coaching expertise through the NYCFC and City Football Group coaching methodology. As part of the program, NYCFC will also fully fund a USSF coaching badge for the candidates that are trained through the program.

The Coach Mentorship Program is a nine-month network of programming and services that will focus on the three core areas of NYCFC’s football business: NYCFC Academy, City in the Community Foundation (CITC) and Youth Programs – with a dedicated three-month course for each pillar of the NYCFC footballing pyramid.

Sam Pugsley, NYCFC Vice President of Sporting Operations and Strategy, commented: “The launch of this Coach Mentorship Program is something that NYCFC Sporting Director, David Lee, and I are very pleased to announce. Soccer is a global game and there is no better sport for bringing people together. We are in a passionate and knowledgeable soccer city with a huge amount of talented coaches – many of whom are eager for further learning opportunities to hone their skills. We want to make sure that this program is open to individuals from all backgrounds. We have taken time to properly develop this program in order to create a detailed and unique nine-month program with our aim in making the playing field more equitable.”

All accepted applicants will be required to meet in-person and online during each phase of the program for a cumulative total of 180 hours of mentoring and education. Each area of the business will focus on the specifics of coaching as pertinent to each core area and the tailored programming is designed to advance the coaching skills, further educate in-game and training knowledge, and advance professional connections for those accepted.

The application opens today, November 17, 2021 and will run through January 15, 2022. The First cohort of coaches will begin in March 2022 with five accepted candidates. Those interested in joining the mentorship program can apply here. The program is a paid mentorship.
