‘Blue Bloods’: One Star Binge-Watched Show But Only After He Joined Cast
“Blue Bloods” star Steven Schirripa shares that he only began watching the show after joining the cast. Luckily, he is all caught up now!
Steven Schirripa is a versatile actor and voice artist. Whether he is playing Bobby Baccalieri on “The Sopranos,” or Detective Anthony Abetemarco on “Blue Bloods,” he dives headfirst into each role. This research into his characters does not go unnoticed by fans. However, these same viewers are now surprised by a recent interview with the “Blue Bloods” star.
In a chat with Talk Nerdy With Us back in 2016, Steven Schirripa reveals that he had not watched many episodes of “Blue Bloods” before joining the show. “I didn’t watch the show much before I was on it and then I did a whole binge-watch so that I could get caught up,” Schirripa shares.
This quote my surprise fans because of the star’s smooth transition into his role as Detective Abetemarco. However, Schirripa continues to say that he is a huge fan of the show now.
“The crew is great and I have to tell you that it’s very well-done,” Schirripa added at the time.
The Role Of Detective Anthony Abetemarco
With 6 seasons under his belt, the “Blue Bloods” star is still fascinated by his character. Detective Abetemarco is an investigator for the New York District Attorney’s Office who always puts his family first. Abetemarco takes care of his daughter with his ex-wife Vivian and does his best to protect the people he loves. Steven Schirripa adds layers of humor to his character as well. By making wisecracks and finding joy in Italian food, he is the quintessential New Yorker.
“I think Anthony is a little unorthodox and I don’t think he cares so much about how he looks,” Schirripa shares. “He kind of beats to his own drum. He’s very loyal and I think that he’s very good at what he does. He’s a very good investigator.”
In this same interview, fans learn that Detective Abetemarco’s backstory continues to be developed. The writers and Schirripa learn more about the character every day: “In each episode, something pops up and we learn a little bit more about the guy. With me and the writers, it usually goes hand-in-hand.”
With Season 12 airing now, the actor enjoys how challenging the role is to play. These new pieces of Detective Abetemarco’s story make “Blue Bloods” even more exciting. In turn, they help Steven Schirripa grow as an actor.
“He’s very different from a straight-laced cop,” Schirripa says. “That’s what I like about him.”
“Blue Bloods” airs every Friday night at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
