As we said, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles in The Matrix Resurrections as Neo and Trinity, despite both characters being dead at the end of The Matrix Revolutions.

Set photos have already revealed Neo and Trinity back in action, but there's no word on how they will return yet.

Other returning cast members are Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, the character she played in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and Daniel Bernhardt reprising his role sa Agent Johnson.

Lambert Wilson is apparently back as the Merovingian, and if does return, it's likely that Monica Bellucci will reprise her role as Persephone, the wife of the Merovingian.

Hugo Weaving was in negotiations to reprise his role as Agent Smith, but those fell through because of his commitments to London's National Theatre. Lawrence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the original The Matrix trilogy, told the New York magazine that he was not asked to return, but he wishes the production well.

Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) is one of the newcomers joining the cast of The Matrix Resurrections, and he's playing a significant role.

Aquaman and Watchmen actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also joined the cast, and according to rumors, he will play a younger version of Morpheus.

In October 2021, Warner Bros. revealed the official plot synopsis for The Matrix Resurrections:

"In a world of two realities—everyday life and what lies behind it—Thomas Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. Choice, while an illusion, is still the only way in or out of the Matrix, which is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before,"

Lana Wachowski hasn't revealed any plot details about The Matrix Resurrections, so it's still unclear how Neo and Trinity will return, but there have been rumors on how Neo will come back. However, there are some clues we can look at to give us an idea how the story will unfold, such as Reeves's buzzcut hair hinting that Neo will be stepping outside the Matrix again in the sequel. You can also check out the new trailer in the latter half of this article to give you a better idea what you can expect.

The Matrix Resurrections screenplay is being co-written by Lana Wachowski, Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell, and The Lazarus Project author Aleksandar Hemon, so expect the plot to be well-written and dense.

On Aug. 26, Lilly Wachowski, the co-director of the original Matrix trilogy, recently explained why she's not returning to the franchise to helm The Matrix Resurrections.

"I didn't want to have gone through my transition and gone through this massive upheaval in my life, the sense of loss from my mom and dad, to want to go back to something that I had done before and sort of walk over old paths that I had walked in, felt emotionally unfulfilling and really the opposite," Wachowski said. "Like I was going to go back and live in these old shoes in a way. And I didn't want to do that."

Warner Bros. already released a vague synopsis for The Matrix Resurrections, which seemingly suggest that the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions will be erased from canon.

The Matrix Resurrections is a continuation of the story established in the first MATRIX film. It reunites Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as cinematic icons Neo & Trinity in an expansion of their story that ventures back into the Matrix and even deeper down the rabbit hole. A mind-bending new adventure with action and epic scale, it's set in a familiar yet even more provocative world where reality is more subjective than ever and all that's required to see the truth is to free your mind. 20 years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. The Matrix remains in the zeitgeist as a film that has changed the way we look at cinema and reality itself. With its game changing action and visual effects, The Matrix helped pave the way for films to follow.

David Mitchell, the author of Cloud Atlas and the co-writer of The Matrix Resurrections, teased the film in an interview with Greek newspaper To Vima (via Total Film magazine).

“I saw the film in Berlin in September. It’s really good,” Mitchell said. “I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It’s certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It’s a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieved a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters.”

Just days before The Matrix Resurrections is set to release in theaters, Warner Bros. released a featurette that shares a few plot points but it doesn't fully reveal the movie's mysterious story. In video, we see where Thomas Anderson (played by Keanu Reeves), a.k.a. Neo, is. We also see how Thomas is connected to Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and how the new character Bugs (Jessica Henwick) fits into their story. Although the featurette doesn't fully explain the plot of the movie, it's enough to give us a slight idea how the characters will connect in the story.
