Soccer star Megan Rapinoe didn’t just call American history “gross.”
She also told “white people” that leadership must be deferred to marginalized groups. To Rapinoe, American history isn’t only “gross” — it’s also “destructive,” “violent,” and “hateful.”
“Particularly for white people, I really do think it’s on us to defer to leadership of people who are marginalized and are traditionally cut out of all these stories, to not just lead, but to fill in the story,” she said during an interview.
Rapinoe added, “We have such a small understanding and narrow view of even what the history of America is — which, if you really think about it, is pretty gross in a lot of ways. It’s pretty destructive and violent and hateful in many ways.”
The soccer icon was speaking with Professor Cathy Park Hong about her book Minor Feelings: An Asian American Awakening, which was released in 2020. Hong is a Korean American author who focuses on Asian Americans and their treatment as a culture in the United States.

This wasn’t the first time Rapinoe has spoken out against American society.
After being known for kneeling during the national anthem for various political issues, Rapinoe and the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team stopped the public displays of protest in February.
She and the team had knelt at first after San Francisco 49ers football player Colin Kaepernick began the trend in 2016. They knelt for issues spanning from police violence against minorities to the alleged gender pay gap.
Former President Donald Trump criticized Rapinoe in August, calling her “the woman with purple hair” and mocking Team USA’s third-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics.
“If our soccer team, headed by a group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn’t woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze,” Trump said in an email to his supporters. “The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics instead of doing her job!”
