Unlike many of Disney’s 2021 films, Shang-Chi actually premiered exclusively in theaters before arriving on Disney+. During its theatrical run, the film broke annual and seasonal box-office records and was a widespread success.
In contrast, Marvel’s previous film, Black Widow, premiered simultaneously on Disney+ and in theaters, but an additional charge was required to watch it at home via Disney’s Premier Access service. Despite being successful, this led to a lawsuit case between Scarlett Johannson & Disney on account of an alleged breach of contract.
