For nearly three decades, the hit CBS franchise NCIS has made viewers feel every kind of emotion, and it could soon cause more heartbreak when NCIS: Los Angeles comes to an end.

Following the season 12 finale, TVLine spoke to showrunner R. Scott Gemmill about what fans could expect in season 13 and the possibility of NCIS: LA ending. As it turns out, the final chapter of the show is something his team has thought about.

“We sort of always have that in the back of our mind, [but] I will hope to get a heads-up if that is the case,” he told the outlet. “Just so that we can go out with an episode, or a bunch of episodes, that really tie up things and send our characters into the future in a way that makes everyone happy. But we’ll just have to wait and see. If there is someone that knows, they’re not telling me.”

As folks may know, NCIS: Los Angeles was the first spinoff for NCIS, which premiered in 2006, six years after the original in 2003. Currently, NCIS: LA is up to its thirteenth season. Before it got its green light for a new installment, though, there were questions about whether the series was losing steam after 15 years on air.

Meanwhile, the original NCIS show is undergoing major changes. After Gibbs (Mark Harmon) made his sudden exit at the beginning of season 19, Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and the rest of the crew are now solving cases under the guidance of newcomer Park (Gary Coles). And then there's NCIS: Hawai’i, which was added to the CBS lineup this fall. It made history for the franchise with the first female special agent in charge, Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey).

Although there’s no word yet about when NCIS: LA will officially end, it would most likely be announced in the spring around finale time. Many might remember hearing about fellow NCIS spinoff NCIS: New Orleans and its cancellation news this past May. It aired from 2014 to 2021 for seven years and a total of seven seasons.

All that said, fans still have 12 new episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles to look forward to in season 13.
