The Montreal Canadiens start to the 2021-22 season has been a disastrous one. A five game losing streak without being able to average a goal per game to begin a season is not ideal.

It hasn’t gotten much better over the past ten or so games either. The Canadiens have the lowest points percentage in the Eastern Conference and the worst goal differential as well. It hasn’t been pretty.

When things go south this fast on an NHL team, they may start to look at shaking things up, but the Habs options are limited.

We won’t see them fire a head coach because, well, they did that last season. They are still paying Claude Julien until the end of this season even though he was fired nearly a year ago. I can’t imagine we see Dominique Ducharme get fired and then the Habs have to pay three head coaches at the same time.

They could change the general manager, and it appears they are heading in that direction in the near future anyway. Marc Bergevin is in the final year of his contract and couldn’t secure a contract extension after his team reached the Stanley Cup Final a few months ago so he is not likely to do so anytime soon.

But switching general managers midseason isn’t likely to shake things up much on the ice. First, I think it is possible we see a big trade to try and snap the Canadiens out of this early season funk. Who could the Habs target? What needs do they really need to fill?

Let’s take a look at three trades the Canadiens could, and should be considering right now.
