Earlier this year, Willie Spence came in second place on Season 19 of American Idol. This week, the 22-year-old singer is appearing on the TV One show Life Therapy, seeking advice from host AJ Akua Johnson.

In a preview clip from the episode, Spence talks to Johnson about the nerves he often experiences before performing. The pair takes a spiritual approach to dealing with the issue.

In the clip from Tuesday’s episode, Johnson asks Spence to share “one block” he has. Spence replies, “Honestly, sometimes I can say myself.” Johnson seems surprised by this, asking Spence to elaborate.

“I just feel like sometimes I put myself in a box,” Spence shares. “Like, for example, if I have to perform or something, I get very, very, very nervous. And I have to pray my way through, and I just put myself in a box and think that I can’t do it, but in the end I turn out doing it.”

Spence says he doesn’t know where the nerves are coming from, so Johnson suggests that they “see what God says.” She tells him to open a book to any page and read whatever passage is there. Spence opens it to a page talking about confidence, and telling him not to focus so much on material things or physical appearance.

“That’s real,” Spence says after reading the passage. You can watch more from Spence’s experience when Life Therapy airs Tuesday night at 10/9c on TV One.
