Red Sox manager Alex Cora finished fifth in the voting for the American League Manager of the Year award in 2021, according to results announced on MLB Network on Tuesday. Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash won the award, receiving 19 of 30 first-place votes. Cora received one first-place vote, three second-place votes and two third-place votes.
Cash, a former Red Sox catcher, won the award for the second straight year. Another former Red Sox player -- Giants manager Gabe Kapler -- won it in the National League. The last Red Sox manager to take home the honor was Jimy Williams in 1999.
In his first year back after serving a one-year suspension for his role in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, Cora helped the Red Sox greatly overachieve by going 92-70, grabbing a wild-card spot and eventually advancing to the ALCS. The 46-year-old has now received votes for the awards in two of three seasons managing the Red Sox; he finished second behind Oakland’s Bob Melvin in 2018 after leading Boston to a 108-54 regular season record.
