Area Roundup: Barstow's Vasquez, Granite Hills' Roy qualify for CIF-SS cross country finals

Two local runners qualified for the CIF-Southern Section cross country finals after strong showings at the prelims over the weekend.

Barstow’s Angelina Vasquez and Granite Hills’ Hunter Roy finished in the top-8 of their heats at Mt. San Antonio College. 

No local teams qualified for the finals. 

The Barstow girls team just missed the cut, finishing sixth in the third Division 4 heat. Vasquez qualified as an individual, coming in sixth place (19:15.1) in the heat.

University Prep's Florence Moreno finished 21st in the division’s second heat with a time of 21:22.2.

Roy just made the cut in Div. 3, taking eighth place with a time of 16:09.8 in his heat. 

Both Serrano teams, competing in Div. 2, just missed qualifying for the finals.

The girls team finished sixth in the second heat. Tiani Goeson led the way for the girls with a time of 19:49.7, good for 12th in the heat, and 29th in the merged results. 

Her sister, Xyrie, a freshman, finished 20th in the heat at 20:26.5.

The boys team finished its heat seventh overall, led by Anthony Hernandez’s 19th-place finish at 16:44. 

Silverado’s Ja’Patrick Smith and Hesperia’s Victor Amaro also competed in the division. Smith finished 34th in his heat with a time of (17:20.8), and Amaro took 28th (17:04.9) in his heat.

The Barstow boys just missed qualifying, finishing sixth in its heat in Div. 4. Luke Ramey led the team coming in 14th overall (16:51.4) and Joshua Sickler finished right behind at 18th, with a time of 17:08.3. 

Granite Hills’ Charlotte Hele finished 15th in the second heat of Div. 3. with a time of 20:29.6. 

The finals are scheduled for this weekend at Mt. SAC’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium. 

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL 

Apple Valley 62, AAE 30

At Apple Valley, the Sun Devils kicked off the season with a 32-point victory over the Knights on Monday.

Michael Dominguez led all scorers with 18 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and three steals.

James Rodriguez added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Granite Hills 59, Riverside Prep 51

At Oro Grande, the Cougars topped the Silver Knights on Monday night in the opener of the Riverside Prep tourney.

Apple Valley 36, AAE 25

At Apple Valley, Simran Ahluwalia led the Sun Devils with 12 points in the season opener against the Knights on Monday night. 

Za'Kiya Oliver filled the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds, five assists and seven steals.

PREP GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Lotu named Agape League MVP

After leading Silver Valley to the first league title in program history, Eliza Lotu capped her season by earning the Agape League’s Most Valuable Player award. 

Lotu led the Trojans with 197 kills, 159 aces, 183 digs, while also dishing 41 assists, which was second-best on the team. 

Lotu was joined by four teammates on the First Team, and John Lee was named coach of the year.
