Zion Williamson likely out until December
Hello everyone. I'm W. D. S. U. Sports anchor fletcher Medical. Thank you for logging on to W. D. S. U. Dot com and our social media platforms as well as our free mobile app joining us right now to talk more about the new Orleans. Pelicans. Jake Madison from the podcast locked on pals. Jake your most recent podcast I thought was fantastic. You talk about Zion's injury the way the pelicans have handled it, how both parties are responsible for what is becoming an embarrassing situation. I have one crazy question for you and it is really crazy like way over the top is there a point where the pelicans just say let's trade Zion before this becomes untenable before they are pinned against the wall. So to say if the phone rings, I'm not saying they're shopping's ion but if the phone rings do they entertain a phone call for potentially another starter? If Neil O'Shea, the general manager in Portland's calls and offers up Damian Lillard, what do the Pelicans do? Is that crazy far fetched? I think it's pretty far fetched. But I think there's two scenarios where this could happen. The first and foremost would be if they strongly feel that Zion Williamson will take the qualifying offer and turn down an extension. This offseason he'll be eligible for the qualifying offer to become, you know a restricted free agent or not a restricted free agent in two seasons. If they think he's going to leave the first chance he gets and that would be after five years in new Orleans. They might look to kind of preemptively strike and trade him to get the best return possible and rest assured Zion Williamson would likely have the best return in a trade in NBA history. Should that be the case? The other scenario where they might entertain it a little bit is if he just doesn't act like a professional and doesn't really take his rehab seriously and starts almost actively harming his NBA future, if that's the case, whether it's bad advice from family, maybe it's just his true distrust of the franchise. That's when I think they'll look to move on to this from this situation because at that point it's just kind of toxic and you need to maximize the return just to try and put a winner out there on the court in New Orleans and not trade him for pennies on the dollar when kind of word gets out around the league that things are bad here around him. Those are the only two scenarios that I could see them even entertaining a trade for Zion Williamson. But I also think we're really far away from those two scenarios happening. So in the foreseeable future this season, going even into this offseason, I don't think there's a move at stake and look, does ownership want to, as you just mentioned, right if they kind of look at David Griffin and go, hey, this isn't the right thing, Would it be a scenario where it was Dell Demps trying to maybe save his job and they weren't gonna let him trade really anyone away or even trade future assets to try and put a winner around Anthony Davis knowing that at that point it was all done. They needed to start over. So maybe you see ownership step in and go, we're not gonna do anything here because we don't want you making the wrong move or to try and cover for yourself.
