STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) will commemorate National Lung Cancer Awareness Month with a ceremony to honor people who have died from lung disease, those who have survived it and people who are currently battling the disease.
The ceremony will take place outside the main entrance of RUMC on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 11:00 a.m.
Hospital leaders, members of the medical staff, and lung cancer survivors will share brief remarks during the ceremony. After the ceremony, turquoise ribbons will be placed outside the hospital in remembrance of people who have died from lung cancer. Turquoise is the signature color of the American Lung Association’s (ALA) LUNG FORCE initiative. Representatives from the ALA will be present and provide further information about the disease.
National Lung Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign that takes place in November to drive awareness of lung cancer. As the cause of nearly 25% cancer deaths, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, according to the American Cancer Society.
In the press release for the event, RUMC describes itself as having “one of the most comprehensive lung screening and tobacco cessation programs in New York City.” RUMC’s pulmonologists, many of whom are board certified, help prevent lung cancer, provide more positive outcomes through early detection of the disease. RUMC’s tobacco cessation program is also significant in helping people to quit smoking and improve their health.
