2 games I was shocked didn't get GOTY nominations, Forza Horizon 5 and Monster Hunter Rise

Racers seldom get nominated for GOTY.

  • +6
victor83fernandes Brimac19 (on 16 November 2021)

Forza horizon is a skippable game, its just the same as forza horizon 3, and 4, I agree it does not deserve a spot there. In fact racers usually don't get a spot because the premise is always the same, race others, that's it, nothing ground-breaking.
On the other hand I think Metroid doesn't deserve a spot there over games like Returnal, Metroid dread is just the same as metroid Samus returns on 3ds, almost no difference.
In my opinion, Scarlet nexus also deserves a spot there over the likes of Ratchet. Scarlet Nexus was original, unique. Scarlet nexus has a better story, nicer art style, better characters and its also a much longer game.
My personal top 5
1 - Returnal
2 - Monster Hunter Rise
3 - Scarlet Nexus
4 - Resident Evil Village
5 - Either Bowser's Fury, Guardians of the galaxy, Shin megami 5 or Tales of Arise

AkimboCurly victor83fernandes (on 16 November 2021)

Got to disagree there. FH5 is a masterclass both on a technical level, and in terms of scale, gameplay, sound as a racer.

Edit: On the point about "the premise is always the same, race others, that's it, nothing ground-breaking"...RPG's "the premise is always the same, rank up, acquire items, complete quests, nothing ground-breaking"... It's about the execution, and Forza's is top class

  • +8
scrapking AkimboCurly (on 17 November 2021)

And that's not even an accurate summation of the premise. There's mountains of non-racing content in the game. When I play a Forza Horizon game, I rarely enter races. Like, really rarely.

  • 0
scrapking victor83fernandes (on 17 November 2021)

The fact that you're describing it as a racing game, where you can play it for days and not participate in a single race, suggests that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the Forza Horizon series is about. It's a car-based adventuring series. Many challenges are solo. A lot of the content is about exploration.

It's not a racing game, not in the way something like Forza Motorsport or Mario Kart is.

Honestly, my only gripe with the GOTY nominees is I would swap Returnal for Deathloop. The rest seem appropriate enough.

  • +8
victor83fernandes Nuvendil (on 16 November 2021)

I agree returnal should be on the list, unfortunately I have yet to play deathloop, only game there that I didn't play, so I cant have an opinion, I doubt it could be as good as returnal, especially in the replayability department, I hope I'm surprised when I get to play it.

I can easily see Ratchet winning multiple awards, Returnal a few as well.

  • 0

Ratchet would probably win in graphics and performance. Also will win as the only game that makes the ps5 fan audible :) Returnal should be game of the year, its something different, fresh, and that's what I wanted from a new generation.

JWeinCom (on 18 November 2021)

Only games I played on the list are Dread and Psychonauts. They are both better than anything else I've played this year, so I can't really argue they don't deserve it, but at the same time, they just don't feel GOTY calibur to me. Maybe it was just a kind of down year.

That being said though, I think Dread is the better game. Psychonauts 2 had a much better story obviously but the gameplay was sort of off. It was a collectathon platformer, but that just didn't jive with the story they were trying to tell. And, the platforming wasn't actually all that interesting. The platforming is never actually difficult, and the enemies are completely divorced from the platforming, so there's very little to stop you from getting from one place to the next. Compared to the original Psychonauts there wasn't as much variety in the levels. No point and click adventure style levels, Kaiju levels, life sized board games, etc. Metroid on the other hand didn't have much of a story, as is par for the course, but the gameplay is great, and I'll generally opt for great gameplay over a great story if I have to choose.

So, while I have no objection to either being on the list, I find it a bit curious that of the two Metroid is the one that's drawing all of the ire.

Why did they get rid of the Player's Voice award introduced in 2019 (the one that is 100% decided by player votes)? Was that only created because they knew they snubbed Fire Emblem: Three Houses for GOTY nomination that year?
It is a good category that I wish had stayed each year.

It doesn't really dawn on you until you see this list how weak of a lineup 2021 has been for gaming.

I know that may sound harsh but a list like this feels downright barren in comparison to previous years.

With that being said, I have a feeling Deathloop will take home the top prize. Not only was it heralded as a possible GOTY when it launched but it really surprised a lot of people.

I'm just hoping we some great game trailers at the show. Last year's outing was IMO the worst VGA possibly in its history so Geoff will have a pretty low bar to clear in terms of trying to beat that.

Oh boy, I am not looking forward to next year's game awards.
I'm going to place my bet now and say its going to be a fight between zelda botw 2 and horizon 2.

Which also means it's going to be the game awards 2017 part 2

  • 0
Torpoleon Kneetos (on 16 November 2021)

I think it will be between BOTW 2 & Ragnarok, honestly. Could see Forbidden West being 3rd.

  • 0
Trentonater thevideogameninja (on 16 November 2021)

All it really shows is how the lineup for big budget triple A was. The Game Awards was never about the best game but which game spent the most money and was never really credible. The Indie nominations are laughable. 12 Minutes was nominated when you could make several entire lists of possible nominations that deserve it more.

  • 0
scrapking TheLegendaryBigBoss (on 22 November 2021)

It depends on the awards list, as I think some awards lists include remakes and some don't. But in either case, remakes have a higher hill to climb to get on the lists, even if they're eligible.

Does demon souls count as 2021 or 2020, cant remember when it launched, but if its 2021 I agree it should be on the list over the likes of It takes two

ARamdomGamer (on 16 November 2021)

Surprised Dread got the nomination for GotY, not surprised Forza didn't make it. Not surprised that they stuck most Nintendo games under family games because they clearly don't excel at anything else. Kinda sad that the fighting game nominations have to be padded out with Nickelodeon and Demon Slayer. Overall, it sure looks like a Game Awards list.

  • -3
Vendrom (on 17 November 2021)

Games for Impact are always so random lol. I'll go with Before Your Eyes, I really liked the concept of it.

GOTY is slightly underwhelming this year. Personally, I'll go with R&C or Psychonauts since I like platformers and these games feel very different from previous GOTYs. But if I had to wager on what TGA will eventually call their GOTY, Deathloop is my safest bet.

One weird thing is how they treat the Most Anticipated category. You'd expect that this -like Player's Voice- would be voted by the fans, since it would indicate what's the most hyped game. But nah, we only attribute to 10% of the final vote.

Anyways, video game announcements are what I'm looking forward to the most.

I'm telling you it's rigged.

Fortnite gets two spots, Valve games get one, like how tf does that even make sense?. Fornite is an old game at this point as well, same with league.

  • -1
Azzanation Chazore (on 17 November 2021)

Definitely obvious what they are trying to do. They put the games that will get them the most amount of views. A huge chunk of people dont like car racers same with VR so if those games won the award it will hurt the viewership etc.

  • -3
Chazore Azzanation (on 17 November 2021)

This is why I hardly bother with this show, because it's almost always the same results from the onset, and never the truly unexpected.

No surprises with game of the year candidates, these are exactly the ones I had in mind. Overal a pretty slow year and thus an uninteresting category. Good games, but nothing outstanding. I bet Metroid will win because it is simply the best of the rest.

Exactly, and that's the same reason most others here are choosing Metroid, they haven't seen better. How could metroid blow anyone away is beyond me, its exactly the same as the 3DS metroid samus returns, almost the same graphics too. What was it so innovative and unique that blew you away? 2d side scrolling, you never played SNES before?

Spiderman was great, but nowhere near game of the year material, its not even as good as the previous spiderman, it was short too and was not something new, it was more of the same, more like a big DLC. There's at least 15 other games that deserve that spot over Spiderman.

  • 0

Spiderman had one big problem, it came out on the same year as God of war and Red dead redemption 2, and assassins creed odyssey and ni no kuni 2, bayonetta 2, hollow knight, super smash bros ultimate and shadow of the tomb raider, Hades, that was huge competition, either one of those could have easily been game of the year and I'd be happy wth any

I'm surprised AoE IV even made the list, considering how very little strategy games get put on the list.

Also weird how Fortnite gets two nomination spots, yet CSGO and Dota 2 only get one spot.

Also "role playing" feels stretched out at this point, just to add another table 9Cyberpunk makes sense because you make up your character, but MH is you just hunting monsters, not much to role play from that, or SMT either).

I actually don't even accept the premise that Forza Horizon 5 is a "racer". Forza Motorsport is a racer. Forza Horizon has some racing content, but also a tonne of content based around solo challenges and exploration. I rarely, if ever, enter a race when I play Forza Horizon. But I spend a tonne of time exploring, doing solo challenges, and levelling up my character.

  • +1
GaoGaiGarV shikamaru317 (on 17 November 2021)

A 92 for a racing game means that it is an exceptionally good racing game. An 84 for a horror game means that it is a very good horror game. It doesn't mean that the racing game is better than the horror game because scores are not comparable accross different genres.
If the jury thinks that the horror game, the stealth shooter, the platformers or the action adventure are all better than the racing game despite having lower scores in their individual genre then that is totally legitimate.

Which racing game? I thought we were talking about Forza Horizon 5, which is a car-based adventure game that has some racing content, but also a tonne of solo challenges, exploration, and character progression-related content. I rarely, if ever, race anyone or anything when I play FH.
