NY Mets’ Noah Syndergaard headed to Los Angeles Angels in $21M deal

New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard is leaving the Big Apple.

So long, Thor.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports “Right-hander Noah Syndergaard and the Los Angeles Angels are in agreement on a one-year, $21 million deal, pending physical, sources tell ESPN. The Angels bolster their staff with the highest-upside arm on the market — and pay a heavy price, plus a second-rounder.”

MLB Network’s Peter Gammons reports “A former Mets official heard Syndegaard had two $21m offers besides the Angels—and one for close to $25m.”

Word of Syndergaard’s deal came shortly news broke that the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a seven-year, $131 million contract extension with right-hander Jose Berrios.

The 29-year-old Syndergaard missed all of the 2020 season and most of 2021 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He returned in September to make a pair of starts after pitching two games with the Syracuse Mets.

Syndergaard made his MLB debut in 2015 and helped the Mets reach the World Series that season.

He was an All-Star in 2016 and finished eighth in National League Cy Young Award voting, setting career marks in wins (14), ERA (2.60) and strikeouts (218).

The Mets extended the one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer to Syndergaard, so New York will receive draft pick compensation as he leaves for the West Coast. Syndergaard had until Wednesday to accept or reject the qualifying offer.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reports “#Mets would get comp pick between 2nd-3rd rounds if Syndergaard finalized with #Angels. Same if other QO FA Conforto declines (as expected). Billy Eppler is looking at June draft with 6 of roughly top 100 picks, including 11th and 14th overall. Unless NYM sign QO free agt.”

In an interesting twist, Syndergaard heads to the Angels while former Los Angeles GM Billy Eppler is set to take over in Queens.
