Bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon sells for $1 million in record-breaking auction

That’s one expensive drop.

A bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon sold for a whopping $1 million at a charity auction in New Orleans earlier this month.

It is the highest price for a bottle of wine ever sold at an auction, Sonoma Magazine reports.

A man named Don Steiner placed the winning bid on the six-liter bottle of Setting Wines 2019 Glass Slipper Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon back on Nov. 6.

The wine was made in California’s Napa Valley by award-winning winemaker, Jesse Katz.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the six-liter bottle fetched such a hefty price tag. A 750ml bottle of the same wine retails for $185 — but only 900 bottles, or 75 cases, were produced of the larger bottle.

The bottle claimed by Steiner at the charity auction is believed to be the only six-liter one available, according to the magazine.

No other details about the highest bidder, including where he lives or what he does for a living, were released.

The charity auction was to raise funds for American celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse’s foundation.

In 2018, Sotheby's auctioned off a bottle of Romanee Conti for $558,000 making it the second-most bottle of wine ever auctioned off.

“It is such an honor to have set the world record for most expensive single bottle of wine ever sold and raise $1 million for a cause that is so close to my heart,” the winemaker said.

“I’m still pinching myself.”

Rare, historic bottles of wine have been known to sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction.

Record prices, however, haven’t included bottles auctioned for charity — like the recent on in New Orleans.

In a 2018 Sotheby’s auction, a 1945 Romanée Conti sold for $558,000. A second bottle of the same 1945 wine sold for $496,000 at the same auction.
