The Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander Jose Berrios agreed to a seven-year contract extension, the team announced Thursday.
The deal will reportedly pay the two-time All-Star $131 million, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
The pact includes an opt-out clause after the fifth season and limited no-trade protection, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The deal, which buys out the final year of his arbitration eligibility and the subsequent six seasons, pays Berrios a $5-million signing bonus and contains an additional $10 million in performance bonuses, maxing the deal out at $141 million, Davidi adds. Berrios is owed $48 million from the deal after the opt-out clause.
If Berrios uses his opt-out, the deal will pay the pitcher $83 million over five years.
Berrios was dealt to the Blue Jays at the trade deadline last season. He posted a 3.52 ERA with 204 strikeouts over 192 innings (32 starts) between Toronto and the Minnesota Twins during his age-27 campaign in 2021.
Berrios' extension is the second-largest contract in franchise history, behind only George Springer's six-year, $150-million pact signed in January.
