F1 legend Fernando Alonso shares his brutal take on facing Mercedes amid the team's dominant form all these years.

Mercedes has won seven straight F1 constructor championships, with Lewis Hamilton winning every single year from 2014-2020. Alonzo, a champion himself, knows what it takes to succeed in the sport mightily but is also aware of the vast advantages a team like Mercedes has over rival teams.

“As a driver, it’s like playing basketball and there’s one basket for you and one for the others,” Alonso said as quoted by Speedweek.

“They score their points with a bigger basket and you have to score yours with a smaller one, so you always lose.”

The Spaniard won two F1 titles throughout his career from 2005-2006; Alonso made his mark with Renault before moving to other teams such as McLaren and Ferrari. Today, Alonso is at the twilight of his career with Alpine, nowhere near winning a championship.

“I am lucky to have won two championships and I was privileged to have been in that position.”

“But I just imagine young children watching this sport and seeing one car pass two others in the straight line. We shouldn’t let them lose hope that they can be champions.

“We are all as committed to the sport. We train a lot, we work in the simulator, we risk our lives every time. But we’re still one lap behind in every race, and we know before we even go to Qatar. It’s really the only sport in which something like this happens.”

It's true, Mercedes' and Red Bull's cars seem to be constantly ahead of the pack this season, despite the presence of world-class drivers from rival teams. Will things change in F1? or will the sport always have a favorite, year after year.
