Before finding Fraser’s Ridge, Claire and Jamie are separated in the backcountry in a storm. Claire sees a ghost in Outlander Season 4, but who is it?

There are a lot of questions that come up as new people join the Outlander fandom. These questions are only natural. One of them is about the ghost that Claire sees early on in Outlander Season 4.

In our readthrough, we’re at the end of The Fiery Cross. Thoughts of the ghost come up again, along with a little more about who the ghost was before he died. It seems like the perfect time to delve back into this Season 4 storyline.

It all takes place during Outlander Season 4, Episode 3. Claire and Jamie are heading from Jocasta’s plantation to Wilmington. The plan is to make a home there, but they’re stuck in a storm in the backcountry and separated one night. During the storm, Claire sees a Native American holding a torch.

Claire sees the ghost of Otter Tooth in Outlander Season 4

The next morning, Claire’s boots (nope, those zippers are not an error!) are missing. Claire also comes across a skull and an opal. She follows tracks left in the mud to her boots, where Jamie is waiting for her.

This happens to be when Claire and Jamie find a place for Fraser’s Ridge, but it’s much more important in the world of time travel. You see, the skull has silver fillings, something not invented until the 1800s.

What’s going on? It turns out the skull belongs to the Native American Claire saw in the woods that night. That Native American was a ghost, and we find out in the Outlander Season 4 finale that the man was called Otter Tooth. He had come to warn the people of the time about how the white people would take over. He wanted the Mohawk and other tribes to join together to wipe out the white settlers.

When considered too dangerous, Otter Tooth was taken away and killed. He was buried far away from the tribe, which is how he ended up in North Carolina. His ghost likely appeared to Claire because a) she’s also a time traveler and b) she was right by his skull and the opal.

We eventually come across someone who traveled with Otter Tooth, although they ended up in different time periods after going through the stones. We may get more of the story when (well, if?) Wendigo Donner shows up again.
