Savoie, Mazur Pick Up NCHC Player of the Week Awards

Named the conference's forward and rookie of the week

DENVER – The National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced on Monday that University of Denver sophomore Carter Savoie has been named the league's forward of the week while freshman forward Carter Mazur has been named the rookie of the week.

This is Savoie's third weekly NCHC honor of his career and the second of the season after also being named the forward of the week for Oct. 11-17. This is Mazur's first collegiate weekly honor.

Savoie led all NCHC players in scoring last weekend, recording four goals and an assist as the Pioneers swept their series against Western Michigan. On Friday, the St. Albert, Alberta, native tallied twice and added a helper for his third three-point outing of the campaign. Savoie pitched in with two more markers on Saturday night, with both coming in a matter of 20 seconds. It was the fastest two goals scored by the team this season and the third fastest by the same DU player in the last 20 years (since 2000-01). Jack Doremus tallied twice in 17 seconds on Feb. 23, 2019 vs. Miami, while Jarid Lukosevicius scored two times in 16 seconds during the 2017 NCAA National Championship vs. Minnesota Duluth.

The forward ranks second in the NCHC and tied for sixth in the nation in scoring with 17 points (10 goals and seven assists) after 10 games this season. Savoie's 10 goals on the year are second in the country behind Omaha's Taylor Ward (12 goals in 12 games played), and he leads the entire NCAA by averaging 1.7 points per game.

Mazur recorded two goals and two assists over the two contests against WMU, starting with a career-high three points (one goal and two assists) on Friday night. He ended up scoring the game-winning goal in the contest, the first of his career, and the outing served as his second career multi-point contest following his two-goal game in his NCAA debut on Oct. 8 versus Arizona State. The forward found the back of the net again on Saturday, marking the first time he's tallied in back-to-back games.

The Jackson, Michigan, native ranks tied for fourth on the Pioneers with four goals, which is the second-most by a freshman on the squad. He's also added three assists and owns a plus-4 rating on the year.

This is DU's fourth and fifth weekly honor of the season. In addition to Savoie's previous award, Massimo Rizzo was named rookie of the week for Oct. 4-10 and Sean Behrens earned defenseman of the week honors for Oct. 11-17. Rizzo was also named the NCHC Rookie of the Month for October.

Denver's Magnus Chrona was also named a finalist for this week's top goaltender award in the NCHC while Sean Behrens was also a nominee for defenseman of the week.
