Simply put, Matt Duchene has had himself a month.
The Predators forward, who is in his third season with the club, has been one of Nashville's best players since the puck dropped on Opening Night on Oct. 14, and luckily for his team, he can't seem to stop putting said puck in the net.

Duchene scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season on Saturday to give him tallies in three straight games. His first multi-goal game of the season came Thursday in St. Louis, including the overtime winner, and he's currently tied for eighth in the NHL in goals with nine.
The start from Duchene is also flirting with historic levels in Predators franchise history. Per NHL PR, only three Preds have ever recorded more points than Duchene's 16 (9g-7a) in their first 15 games of a season: Steve Sullivan (6g-14-20pts in 2006-07 and 8g-9a-17pts in 2005-06); Filip Forsberg (7g-10a-17pts in 2014-15) and J-P Dumont (2g-15a-17pts in 2008-09).
And, in just 14 games, Duchene has already eclipsed his goal and point totals of six and 13, respectively, from the entire 2020-21 season.
So, why the offensive outburst?
"I really haven't changed anything in terms of my approach, my mentality," Duchene said following Thursday's OT victory in St. Louis. "I just try and get better, and I'm trying to shoot more, that's for sure. But I'm also getting more looks, and it feels good. I've been asked about lack of production a million times the last few years, and I've preached over and over that if the habits are there, eventually it'll go, so it's nice to be rewarded. And the big thing for me is I'm not satisfied at all. I just want to keep going and keep helping this team win, and that's the most important thing. You score in losses, it doesn't mean nearly as much as when you score in wins and help the team win."

NSH@STL: Duchene nets overtime winner for second goal

"To be able to produce at the rate that he's producing, that's what we need as a team," Preds Head Coach John Hynes said of Duchene on Saturday. "But I think the production is part of what he is as a player, but it's also the way that he's playing the game this year is allowing him to be able to earn the minutes he's getting, and then be able to have the production that he's getting. When those things are tied together, now you have a player that can be a strong, offensive threat and can log big minutes, can play against any line. And as long as he continues with that work ethic and the competitiveness and the attention to detail he's playing with now, I don't see why he can't have a fantastic season."
So far, so good, and Duchene's teammates have taken note, too.
One of his linemates, Mikael Granlund, has had an equally impressive start to the season, but he's been the one collecting plenty of assists thanks to Duchene. Granlund dished out both of the helpers on Duchene's overtime winners during Nashville's six-game road trip, and the pair has clicked once more in the early going.
"We've been doing a lot of good things, and obviously Dutchy, he's doing a lot of good things, the way he's shooting the puck and finding the net," Granlund said. "That's great, and he keeps shooting and the puck is just finding its way to the net right now. And you know, I'm really happy for him. He's doing a lot of good things out there."
Predators Captain Roman Josi has been another one of Nashville's top performers to date, but he's also taken note of what Duchene's done to this point - and could he not?
"He's been huge for us," Josi said of Duchene. "I mean, when he goes like that, you can tell, like we're getting a lot of wins. He's creating chances all over the ice, obviously he's got the hot hand with the goals he had in the last couple of games, and he's just got to keep shooting it. He's doing an amazing job of creating chances, creating chances for himself, and it's a huge part of our success."
But of all the thoughts on Duchene that have been offered over the last little bit, No. 95 himself stated it best when asked how much he's been enjoying his start to the campaign.
"It's nice when the puck goes in the net," Duchene said with a grin. "That's for sure."

Hockey's Greatest Warm-Up - What is Sewer Ball?

They play hockey for a living, but most in the game seem to be just as good at another athletic feat.
Make your way through the event level of any arena about an hour before puck drop, and you're sure to find those players kicking around a soccer ball in a hotly-contested match that seems to carry just as much meaning as the real game they're about to play.
It's called Sewer Ball, and there's much more to it than you might think. Allow the Preds to explain.
