The Boston Red Sox are the favorites to sign Kyle Schwarber in free agency thanks to his connection with the city of Boston and hopes of a championship.

The Red Sox found a fan favorite at the trade deadline when they picked up Kyle Schwarber from the Nationals. Now they need to figure out how to keep him.

Schwarber spent the second half of the 2021 season endearing himself to Boston but he’s a free agent and could head to another city if he chooses.

The good news for the Red Sox is there’s good reason to believe he’ll stick around.

Multiple baseball reporters have declared Boston the favorites for Schwarber’s signature.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweeted that he sees Schwarber going to the Phillies but the “Red Sox are seen as the favorite.”

Jared Carrabis of Barstool, who started the whole “Schwarber from Waltham” meme, also has Boston as the favorite.

There may be a bit of tongue-in-cheek about Schwarber’s “house in Waltham” but the player has outright stated his belief in the Red Sox championship potential before.

“This is definitely a clubhouse that I could see myself wanting to stay in,” Schwarber told The Boston Herald. “These guys are amazing. I said this, it’s two World Series teams going at it. This is a World Series clubhouse, and I would love to hopefully see if that opportunity comes back.”

Since Schwarber grew up a Red Sox fan, the fit seems right. Positionally there are some complications with DH and outfielder J.D. Marinez and first baseman Bobby Dalbec creating a crowd at both positions he could play. For a slugger like Schwarber, there’s value in simply making it work.
