Red Notice takes globe-trotting to the max. Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Gal Gadot soar around the world to capture (and possibly save?) famed art. The movie is one of Netflix‘s biggest and most expensive films of all time — but did the streamer have the budget to take these A-listers all around the world for real? And in a pandemic? We have answers.

The glamorous action movie follows an Interpol agent (The Rock) who tag-teams with an infamous con man (Reynolds) to take down the world’s most renowned art thief (Gadot). The trio are after a few beloved Egyptian eggs, and they’ll stop at just about nothing to get them. Hopping from Europe to Asia to Africa, the movie will replace all the traveling you didn’t get to do in 2020.

Where is Red Notice set?

Since the film follows global art heists, it’s really set all over the place. That being said, some popular locations are Rome, a prison in Russia, Valencia, Cairo, Paris, and more. But how did Netflix operate in all these locations amidst a global pandemic? Let’s investigate.

Filming on Red Notice began in early 2020 — as in, before the pandemic. It was halted, however, in mid-March due to the COVID-19 outbreak around the world. Filming resumed in September 2020.

Most of the shooting took place in Atlanta, GA on sets. Tyler Perry Studio was used for most of the Russian prison scenes. But a few scenes were filmed in Italy, specifically in Rome and Sardinia, as well as Paris, France. Ultimately, Red Notice didn’t tour the world like the main trio in the film — somehow, the shots are still realistic, though.

That’s because Red Notice was also one of the first feature films to use first-person drone flying for most of the cinematography. A cameraman used a drone to capture The Rock, Gadot, and Reynolds as they “globetrot.”
