A Chillicothe teen threw a track switch in the middle of a train causing it to derail, according to a police report.
The derailment occurred around 2 p.m. on Nov. 10 at the railroad tracks near Douglas Avenue.
Chillicothe police arrived and began investigating. An employee with CSX, a rail-based freight transporter, told an officer that someone threw a track switch against him in the middle of the train, causing it to derail.
He thought he saw two juveniles in the area when it happened, but did not see who threw the switch.
The officer found an 11-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy in the area. He took them back to their respective guardians.
According to the officer, CSX did not want to pursue charges but wanted to know who did it for the investigation. The 13-year-old said he did not do it and the officer warned him that he would be charged if he lied. The boy again denied being involved.
The 11-year-old, with his grandfather present, said the 13-year-old threw the switch ad that the 11-year-old told him that he shouldn't.
The officer returned to the 13-year-old's home where the boy, after again denying being behind the derailment, said he "thought it would switch the whole train."
On Nov. 12, CSX informed police that they are "considering charges."
